Five candidates will vie for three open seats on the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education in the Nov. 5. election.

Incumbent Trustees Sal Mendoza, Gerardo Mouet and Audrey Yamagata-Noji, who announced their plans to run for reelection earlier this year, will be joined on the ballot by Santa Ana residents Ted Moreno and Rosemarie Avila.

Moreno, 23, is a recent graduate of Cal State Fullerton and works as an administrative budget analyst aide for Southern California Edison. Moreno graduated in 1986 from Santa Ana High School, where he served as student body president.

Avila, 43, is a graduate of Biola University in La Mirada and works as a teacher and administrator at South Coast Christian Academy, a private school in Santa Ana which her five children attend.

Yamagata-Noji, 38, and Mendoza, 45, were both elected to the five-member board in 1987 and have both served as board president.

Mouet, 34, was appointed to the board last December to serve the remainder of Robert L. Richardson’s term. Richardson resigned last November after being elected to the Santa Ana City Council.

The district, which is Orange County’s largest, has 41 schools and more than 46,000 students.
