Ventura County moviegoers will find a variety of alternatives to first-run, blockbuster movies this weekend. There’s even a chance to mark that film calendar for the remainder of the year:

* Saturday, Classic Cinema night at Thousand Oaks Library will feature the 1952 film “Cry, the Beloved Country,” starring Sidney Poitier, Canada Lee and Charles Carson. The movie, based on the novel by Alan Paton, was the first major motion picture to focus on South African apartheid. The story revolves around a black minister from the backcountry who goes to the city in search of his criminal son. Show time is 7 p.m. at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road. For information, call 495-1392.

* Those who like their movies quiet, very quiet, might head over to the film festival at Olivas Adobe on Saturday night. Silent comedies starring Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are featured. Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 7 to 12. The first movie will begin about 7:30 p.m., or whenever it’s dark enough to show the film outside. Children 6 and under get in free. For information, call 644-4346.

* The Silents Under the Stars series at the Paramount Ranch resumes Sunday with a screening of 1926’s “Ella Cinders.” Colleen Moore stars in this version of “Cinderella” as a mistreated stepdaughter who wins a beauty contest and winds up in Hollywood seeking her fame--and, of course, her prince. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $6. The ranch is on Cornell Road in Agoura. For information, call (818) 597-9192.

* If you’re planning ahead, season tickets go on sale Monday for the Ventura College Community Services 1991-92 travel film series. First on the seven-movie schedule will be “Greece--Apollo to Zorba,” scheduled Oct. 17. The series will also present “Kingdom of the Netherlands,” “Yugoslavia,” “Germany WITHOUT the Wall,” “Biblelands,” “Antarctica--Journey to the South Pole” and “Brazil in a Nutshell.”

Tickets for the entire series are $24 (general/evening show), $21 (general/matinee and senior/evening show) and $18 (senior/matinee). The evening shows are at 7:30 and the matinees are at 3. All films will be shown at the Ventura College Theater. Tickets for individual films go on sale Oct. 7. For information, call 654-6459.
