The Most Rev. John Chedid, an auxiliary bishop of the Maronite Catholic Church, has been hospitalized for injuries that left him unconscious after an attack near his home in Bel-Air.

Chedid, 68, was wearing his robe and clerical collar at the time of the beating Monday night and was taken by paramedics to UCLA Medical Center. He suffered a broken nose, rib, leg and other injuries. The incident was not reported until late Thursday.

Pierre Alwan, president of the Maronite League, a lay church group of mostly Lebanese members, said parishioners were concerned that the attack may have been a hate crime. Chedid’s bishop’s ring, a wallet, cross and watch were not taken.
