Wood Advances to Final of National Diving Meet

Ricky Wood of Simi Valley finished ninth in the men’s platform semifinals Thursday, qualifying for Sunday’s final of the U.S. diving championships in Bartlesville, Okla.

Wood, 18, totaled 462.66 points on his 10-dive program. Scott Donie of Houston, a three-time NCAA champion while at Southern Methodist, was first with 577.20. Brian Earley of Northridge also was among the 12 qualifiers, finishing 10th with 458.88.

Wood, who graduated from Royal High in June, won the 16-18 platform title at last month’s National Junior Olympic championships.

In Thursday’s women’s 1-meter springboard finals, Janae Lautenschlager of Northridge finished second (444.84) to Wendy Lucero of Denver (458.16). Nancy Janik of Simi Valley was sixth with 413.76.

Elise Kimm of North Hollywood shot a five-over-par 77 in the final round of the McDonald’s Betsy Rawls girls national golf championship Thursday in Wilmington, Del., finishing 21 strokes behind medalist Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza, Calif.
