Mel Brooks, Seriously
As far back as the days of Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows” I used to say that if I could be anyone else in the world, it would be Woody Allen--on a good day.
It soon became apparent how few those days were, while “The 2,000-Year-Old Man” et al. indicated that Mel Brooks had one good day right after another. So I revised my druthers: If I could be anyone else in the world, it would be Brooks--on any given day.
He may, indeed, have painted himself with the brush of vulgarity or bad taste, but he uses such great colors.
