Gunmen shouting gang slogans opened fire on a teen-ager in Moorpark and shot at a house where he sought shelter, authorities said Sunday.

Jeffrey Carifi, 18, of Moorpark was not injured in the 11:30 p.m. Saturday shooting, Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Terry Hughes said.

Occupants of the house in the 200 block of Charles Street also escaped harm.

Carifi and an unnamed juvenile were walking near Bard and High streets when a black Hyundai carrying four or five people passed them, Hughes said.

Carifi told police that he waved at the car, thinking that he knew the occupants, Hughes said.

The people in the car, who appeared to be from another town, asked Carifi where he lived.

Carifi said he lived in Moorpark.

The occupants got out of the car, shouted gang slogans and chased Carifi and his friend on foot, Hughes said.

Carifi ran into a house on Charles Street, where he met several other friends.

The car’s occupants returned to their Hyundai and drove down the street, stopping about 200 feet from the house.

Carifi returned to the street and one of the people in the car got out and fired at Carifi, Hughes said.

Again, Carifi was not hit.

The gunman got back into the car, which turned around and drove past the house, Hughes said.

Several more shots were fired at the residence.

“I don’t know that it’s even gangs,” Hughes said.

He said it may be just rivalry between groups from different towns.

No one had been arrested in the shooting as of Sunday.
