Another New Supercomputer: Digital Equipment Co., the nation’s second-largest computer maker, unveiled a family of machines based on massively parallel processing. The machines, priced from $240,000 to $1.5 million, make DEC the first full-service computer maker to release systems using massively parallel processing. This new technology, which is rapidly gaining acceptance among supercomputer makers, divides problems into small parts and assigns them to separate “electronic brains” rather than run the problem through a central processor in sequence.
