O.C. PLATFORM : Wilderness Peril

Even after many years of leading hiking, climbing and skiing groups, I am always saddened to learn of the tragedy that results when others fail to recognize the very real dangers to be found in wilderness areas.

The unfortunate youth now missing in the San Bernardino Mountains is just the latest of many such incidents.

Skills that help adults and children to function in the city are generally ineffective in the wilderness, and to assume otherwise is perilous. Furthermore, it is always incumbent on those with skills and knowledge to act for the welfare of those who do not.

Once again, it should be clear to all that travel in the wilderness carries a grave responsibility. Firm safety guidelines can never be ignored, leadership choices and training are of the very highest priority and no wilderness goal is as important as survival.
