FISHING : Anglers Catch Yellowtail, Barracuda on Trip

After a five-day trip aboard the Shogun to fish San Benito and Cedros islands, 24 South Bay anglers returned with a mixed bag of fish.

Yellowtail made up most of the catch. Anglers used jigs to catch yellows, which averaged 18 pounds.

Brian Gordon won the jackpot with a 35 1/2-pound yellow. Second place went to Harve McInnish, who boated a 34-pounder, and third place went to Dennis Gotanda with a 33-pounder.

The total yellowtail catch was 264. The anglers also caught 189 barracuda.

A 24 1/2-pound white seabass was caught by Keith Hashimoto, who also said he caught 10 yellowtail.

Captain Norm Kagawa said the two areas failed to yield any big catches of tuna, although Steve Wareham did catch a 19-pounder.

The Shogun departed over the weekend for another five-day trip in search of tuna.

Area youths experienced the thrill of fishing last weekend in the annual fishing trip sponsored by the Dream Street Foundation of West Los Angeles.

Each year the foundation brings 35 boys and girls with blood-related illnesses on a five-hour fishing trip aboard Long Beach Sportfishing’s Victory.

All the youngsters caught fish this year. Jerome Murphy was the first when he landed a legal calico bass. Joey Tellues brought up the second calico bass.

All the youngsters caught good size mackerel.

The most fish caught were by brother and sister Joey and Veronica Teller, who caught six mackerel.

After fishing, the Victory anchored near the Queen Mary to watch a fireworks display. The group ate hamburgers, chicken, cake and cookies all provided by Victory Captain George Xino and his crew.

Joining 15 of the foundation coordinators to bait hooks and teach the boys and girls how to fish was Wil Shriner of ABC’s “Home” show and Disneyland entertainers.

Local sand bass fishing continues to set a record pace.

Catalina Island remains a hot spot for barracuda, with some yellowtail being caught on cut squid. Live squid remains in short supply.

Rosie Cadman at the Avalon weigh station reports two marlin were weighed last weekend, bringing the season total to only four.

Joe Barian, fishing from his boat Bongos, caught a 149-pound marlin.

Dan Garrin, fishing from his boat Julia G, decked a 98-pound marlin.

Danny Walters of Long Beach returned early Tuesday morning from a salmon trip to Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Walters fished the Skagit River and landed two salmon weighing 29 and 30 pounds.

South Bay Catches--Richard Case of West Los Angeles, fishing aboard the Sea Spray out from rocky point, caught the whopper of the week, a 29-pound halibut.

Ron Ford of Malibu, fishing aboard the Aquarius at the bubble hole, caught a 29 1/2-pound white seabass.

Grigo Ito of Torrance, used live squid while fishing aboard the Diawa off Catalina to catch a 25-pound white seabass.

Reba Clark of San Pedro, fishing aboard the Hitless Miss at the rigs, caught an 18 1/2-pound yellowtail.

Bob Alvarez of San Pedro caught an 18-pound bluefin tuna during a 1 1/2-day trip on the Cat Special. Phillip Friedman of Torrance caught a 15-pound bluefin and Eddie Pacilio of Redondo caught a 14-pound bluefin on the trip.

Mike Merino of Long Beach, fishing aboard the Sportking at the rigs, caught an 18-pound yellowtail.
