A young woman was gang-raped while her boyfriend was tied up during a robbery at a Midway District motel room, police said Thursday.

Police responded at 12:17 a.m. Wednesday to reports of a rape and robbery at the Budget Motel at 3800 Greenwood St., near the Sports Arena, said Bill Robinson, spokesman for the San Diego Police Department.

The couple, both 19 and from Cucamonga, were attacked after the man answered a knock at the door and was surprised by three intruders who held the couple at gunpoint, Robinson said.

The attackers tied up the man, then took turns raping the woman for about half an hour, Robinson said. Their suitcases were also ransacked and their wallets, which contained about $200 in cash and credit cards, were taken.

The woman was treated at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital, then the couple returned to Cucamonga, Robinson said.

The attackers, described as black men in their 20s, were seen leaving the area by a motel guard who regularly patrols the area, said a motel manager who asked not to be identified. One of the men was wearing a Los Angeles Raiders cap with a white T-shirt and another was wearing a gold paisley shirt, Robinson said.

Police are cautioning people to check their doors before opening them. Although the doors at the Budget Motel do not have peepholes, there is a window by every door.
