Fate of the Coup Leaders

Five of the eight leaders of the failed Kremlin coup have been arrested and another committed suicide, officials said.

Alexander I. Tizyakov, president of the Assn. of State Enterprises

Soviet Defense Council Deputy Oleg D. Baklanov, after parliamentary immunity lifted

SOUGHT FOR ARREST

Head of Soviet Peasants Union Vasily A. Starodubtsev, sought after parliamentary immunity lifted

DEAD

Interior Minister Boris K. Pugo, head of national police, by suicide

UNDER POLICE GUARD

Prime Minister Valentin S. Pavlov, hospitalized for hypertension

PROSECUTION

Criminal investigation opened into actions of coup leaders. President Mikhail S. Gorbachev said “adventurists would be held fully and completely responsible for their unlawful actions.”
