Zmeskal Has Slight Advantage After Gymnastics Compulsories

INDIANAPOLIS — Two-time U.S. champion Kim Zmeskal took a slight lead Friday over Betty Okino in the compulsory portion of the World Gymnastics Team Trials.

The top eight finishers will compose the 1991 U.S. women’s team that will compete in the World Gymnastics Championships Sept. 6-15 at the Hoosier Dome.

Zmeskal of Houston had 47.232 points to 46.946 points for Okino of Elmhurst, Ill. Both girls train at Bela Karolyi’s Houston gym.

Erica Stokes of Olathe, Kan., was third with 46.814 points and Shannon Miller of Edmond, Okla., was fourth at 46.754.

Both Okino and Stokes missed the U.S. Championships with injuries and must finish in the top four in the two-day competition at the Indiana Convention Center to make the world team.
