Shirley Kirkes entered the world of ballet as the result of a bicycle accident when she was 7. She risked becoming crippled, the doctor warned, unless she undertook an exercise program. And with that, her mother enrolled her in a ballet class.

Thus began Kirkes’ dance career that has woven its way through childhood ballet, tap and acrobatics to professional performances in Las Vegas shows, on television specials and in movies.

Fifteen years ago, after touring as a soloist throughout the world, she turned full time to choreography. Three years ago, the West Los Angeles resident formed the Shirley Kirkes Ballet Company and began incorporating Eastern movement into her work.

On Tuesday, at the Alhambra Park Bandshell, Kirkes and her 14-member company will present their blend of classical ballet and contemporary dance, including one piece on homeless young people titled “Where Angels Live and Die.”

The 90-minute show will start at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. The park is at 500 N. Palm Ave.
