Merger of Two Big Banks

I’m not a financial analyst, but the proposed BankAmerica-Security Pacific merger makes me a little nervous.
When two fumbling-bumbling multinationals merge to become one monolithic fumbling-bumbling multinational, we better watch out.
We are told that 20,000 employees will be fired to produce a “more competitive business climate.” Does this actually mean improved performance, more safety, higher rates for depositors and lower rates for borrowers?
The loss of 20,000 jobs will lessen the impact of the mismanagement of the past. These employees will be the “sacrificial lambs.” If this kind of loyalty is shown to their own employees, what kind of loyalty will be shown to the depositors and borrowers?
