Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Mayor Renews Plea for Racial Peace

Mayor David N. Dinkins for the fifth straight day visited the embattled Crown Heights section of Brooklyn to appeal for peace. Hundreds of mourners meanwhile attended a wake for a black child who died when hit by a car driven by an Orthodox Hasidic Jew, sparking riots. Dinkins told about 1,000 people at a nearby church that the riots mostly have hurt blacks. “The stores that are robbed are our stores, the ones we frequent--and so only the community loses,” Dinkins said. Furious that the Jewish driver in the accident was not arrested, blacks rioted and looted stores. A Jewish man not involved in the accident was stabbed to death.
