SIMI VALLEY : Subsidy OKd to Hire School Nurse

Share

The Simi Valley City Council has approved a request by the school district to use $27,400 in federal grant money to subsidize the salary of a nurse for four elementary schools.

The council unanimously approved the request at its meeting Monday night.

The school district is pitching in $30,000 more to help pay for the visiting nurse program, which will serve Santa Susana, Berylwood, Katherine and Park View elementary schools, Assistant Supt. Susan Parks said.

These schools were targeted because each has a large number of children from low- and moderate-income families who may not be able to afford proper health care or counseling, Parks said.

Federal guidelines require that the majority of block grant money that the district receives be used for the benefit of poor children, Parks said.

She said the district has already selected a nurse and will have her in place immediately. But she said administrators have not worked out how the nurse will divide her time between schools.
