Clinic’s Yielding to Pressure Deplored

In response to “Protest Threat Halts Center’s Abortions” (South Bay Digest, Aug. 15), we are alarmed that the South Bay Surgicenter, Torrance, should yield so readily to pressure from anti-abortion activists.

Abortion is a legal and medically accepted procedure in our society. By refusing to allow abortions, the South Bay Surgicenter is undoubtedly hoping to placate extremists and avoid unpleasant publicity. However, the very foundation of a free society is undermined when a small group of individuals are successful in using intimidation to dictate their values to the majority.

This administrative decision by the South Bay Surgicenter has not only impeded the ability of local physicians to implement accepted medical procedure, but has diminished the individual freedom of each of us in the South Bay.
