5 Women Honored by Activist Group
Five Orange County women were honored by the Women’s Network Alert, a coalition of activists, during the group’s 11th annual Suffrage Day Luncheon at the Balboa Bay Club.
Vivian Hall, co-chair of the group that meets only once a year for the recognition ceremony, said the honorees were selected by coalition founders and members because of their work on women’s issues.
“These women are women who contribute to Orange County and to minorities in particular,” Hall said.
The honorees are Frances Williams of Santa Ana, a professor of human development at Rancho Santiago College; Jean Bernstein of Laguna Beach, founder of Orange County Alliance for Survival, a group seeking the destruction of nuclear weapons to promote peace; Mai Cong of Santa Ana, president and creator of the Vietnamese Community of Orange County Inc., a social service agency in Santa Ana; Ruthelyn Plummer of Newport Beach, a 10-year member of the Newport Beach City Council; and Evelyn Colon Becktell of Santa Ana, corporate development officer for Mexican-American Women’s National Assn.
