A man who tried to get into a rap concert at the Hollywood Palladium opened fire early Tuesday on a crowd milling outside, slightly wounding two employees of the hall, authorities said.

The suspect, who had been ejected from the nightspot after trying to get inside, was chased and captured by Police Capt. David Kalish, who was among the officers on patrol outside the Palladium, Sgt. Gary Farmer said.

Police said the gunfire erupted about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Kalish collared the suspected gunman after about a 50-foot chase and officers recovered a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

Nicky Riles, 18, of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder. One victim was wounded in the toe and the other in the right calf.

A crowd estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 had gathered for the concert. “The event was oversold,” Farmer said.
