Rams’ Women Are Game for a Get-Together

Share

No pessimism, please .

All eyes were on the Super Bowl on Saturday when Linda Robinson, wife of L.A. Rams coach John Robinson, welcomed wives and girlfriends of team members into her Yorba Linda home for a poolside luncheon and fashion show.

Will the season be a winner? “Yes! All the way!” cheered Rhea Wilson, wife of defensive end Karl Wilson. “Gooooo Rams!” (Karl’s mum, Kaye, also attended.)

The event marked the first time the women had come together, sans husbands and boyfriends, to get acquainted, Linda Robinson said. During the football season, there’s little time to chat because they’re always on the sidelines cheering and praying .

If Robinson has her way, the group will convene often--maybe often enough to organize and star in a fashion show for charity. “If any of you think that is a good idea, please talk to me about it,” announced Robinson, who owns a modeling agency.

What’s it like, being married to a football coach? (The couple tied the knot last year.) “Well, right now, John’s at practice every day--that’s seven days a week,” said Robinson, who was dressed in grape linen and matching pumps.

It can get lonely.

“When we have home games, it’s wonderful because we have more time together,” she said.

When guests weren’t diving into the luau-buffet--catered by the Hyatt Regency in Irvine--they were touring the immense manse, with its ice-mauve carpet, towering white walls and football-field of a master suite. Or they were sitting poolside--near a rushing waterfall--as they watched models from Robinson’s agency parade what’s haute for fall.

Pssssst! Rams quarterback Jim Everett had no representative at the party. An insider says he has broken up with his girlfriend, who has returned to New York to resume her modeling career. “As far as I know, Jim isn’t dating anyone steadily right now,” said an insider.

If you missed it, you missed out: Fluor Corp. in Irvine was the site of a recent barbecue/birthday bash for Gov. Pete Wilson. Everybody who is politically anybody (you know the names) attended the $250-per-person grand old party. Last year, Wilson partied on his natal day at Le Meridien hotel (Arnold Schwarzenegger attended). Happy birthday, guv.

Now there’s a hole in one: Just when you thought every party theme had been done and overdone, along comes a black-tie-and-tennies miniature golf fund-raiser. That’s right, on Sept. 15, the YMCA of Orange County is inviting the public to putt around the Fountain Valley Family Fun Center. No less than fashion’s Mr. Mean (Mr. Blackwell) will be on hand along with pal, actress Terry Moore, to decide who’s Reeboks are hot or not.

“Reeboks might be comfortable, but when people wear them, I think they look like Martian rejects,” teases Blackwell. But, OK, he says, if he has to wear a pair to the party, he’ll probably jewel them. Blackwell pronounces tennies “very high camp, very ‘30s, almost Gatsy-bish.”

When he judges at the event, he’ll be looking for tennies that have “camp without outrageousness,” he says. “I’d love to see some really artful input.” Tickets are $79.91 per person and $319.64 per “fore-some.”

Speaking of party themes: Have you seen the new Life magazine cover and its hoopla about the book sequel to “Gone With the Wind?” Word’s out that Princess Di will preside over a London charity gala based on the Scarlett/Rhett theme. Local party chairwomen would do well to consider a “Gone With the Wind”-themed bash here. How could the party miss when Orange County boasts two Tara-like mansions--one owned by developer William Lyon in Coto de Caza, the other by recreation-vehicle mogul John Crean in Santa Ana heights. Frankly, it could be wonderful.

Shrewd: The board of trustees of the Grove Shakespeare Festival knows how to honor supporters. Before the opening-night performance of “The Taming of the Shrew” on Saturday, the Shakespeare buffs were treated to bubbly and appetizers in the theater courtyard. Nice. Very nice. If you haven’t attended the festival, better do it now. Local social leaders are finding it’s the place to entertain during warm months. On Saturday, picnic tables in the park adjacent to the theater were set with silver and crystal and gourmet fare. Nice way to act before a performance. Very nice.

Fans of the opera: Opera Pacific’s new season begins on Saturday with “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “I Pagliacci” at Segerstrom Hall. Pre-theater time, Opera Pacific’s Guild Alliance will stage a reception and dinner poolside at the Westin South Coast Plaza. William Roberts, Richard Engel and David DiChiera are hosting. After the performance, Opera Pacific’s prestigious Impresario Circle will host a reception at the Center Club.
