While a grand jury in Indianapolis deliberated whether Mike Tyson will be charged with rape, the former champion and Evander Holyfield formally announced their Nov. 8 fight at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
“Mike Tyson’s legal situation has nothing to do with this fight,” promoter Dan Duva said. “We don’t have the right to prejudge anybody.”
The grand jury decision is expected by Monday. An 18-year-old woman who competed in the Miss Black America pageant told police that Tyson raped her on July 19.
Should Tyson be indicted, Duva said, “There won’t be a trial before Nov. 8. There’s no question about that.”
During the New York news conference, Tyson was served with a summons in connection with a $100-million lawsuit filed by Rosie Jones of Bridgeport, Conn. Jones, Miss Black America of 1990, accuses Tyson of grabbing her waist and buttocks while being photographed with the boxer.
Quipped Duva: “Any other summonses?”
Tyson is guaranteed $15 million for the bout, Holyfield $30 million.
