The car belonging to a Van Nuys woman killed last year in Riverside County on her way home from an Easter weekend in Arizona was found stripped and abandoned outside a Fresno body shop, authorities said.
The 1978 Volkswagen Beetle had been repainted and the Oklahoma license plates removed, but authorities traced the car to Jamie Michele Bowie, 24, through its vehicle identification number, police said. The convertible was found Aug. 20 outside Royal Auto Body.
The discovery of the car prompted tips from citizens that might help solve the slaying, said Sgt. Marco Diaz of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, which is handling the murder investigation.
Bowie, an Oklahoma native who moved to Van Nuys in January, 1990, after graduating from college, was last seen April 16, 1990, when she picked up her car from a repair shop in Mesa, Ariz., before heading back to California on Interstate 10. A month later her bullet-riddled and badly decomposed body was found in a citrus grove north of Indio.
