BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Gooden Doesn’t Need Major Surgery
An arthroscopic examination of Dwight Gooden’s right shoulder Saturday revealed a cartilage tear, loose fragments and a partial tear of the rotator cuff, but major surgery will not be required. Dr. James Parkes, who performed the procedure, said the New York Met ace could begin soft-tossing within eight to 12 weeks.
Also on Saturday, left-hander Sid Fernandez underwent an arthroscopic procedure to replace cartilage under his left kneecap and repair a tear in the front part of the medial cartilage.
