PREVIEW ’91 : Doogie moves out, Woody walks the aisle, Delta departs

Fall doesn’t just mean new shows ... it also means changes in old ones as the networks try to keep series fresh and audience interest high.

Here are the highlights of what’s new in established series and their return dates.

ABC

“MacGyver”--Mac (Richard Dean Anderson) will trade in his houseboat for a loft apartment in the heart of L.A. Sept. 16.

“Full House”--Jesse (John Stamos) and Rebecca (Lori Loughlin) expect their first child. The series moves from Fridays to Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Sept. 17.

“Roseanne”--Darlene (Sara Gilbert) leaves her tomboy days behind and becomes a rebel who dresses in womanly black attire. Star Roseanne Barr has changed her name to Roseanne Arnold. Sept. 17.

“Dinosaurs”--Moves from Fridays to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Sept. 18.

“The Wonder Years”--It’s the fall of 1971 and Kevin (Fred Savage) will be starting high school. Now seen Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2.

“Doogie Howser, M.D.”--The Doog (Neil Patrick Harris) will be moving out of the house and into an apartment with Vinnie (Max Casella). And stop the presses! Doogie will lose his virginity. Sept. 25.

“Anything But Love”--Moves from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays. Sept. 25.

“Pros & Cons”--The James Earl Jones’ series “Gabriel’s Fire” is back for a second season with a new title, a new “lighthearted” concept, a new co-star (Richard Crenna) and a new time slot, 8 p.m. Thursdays. Sept. 26.

“American Detective”--The reality-based series shrinks from one hour to 30 minutes and moves from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays. Sept. 26.

“Perfect Strangers”--Larry (Mark Linn-Baker) and Jennifer (Melanie Wilson) will get married and move into a house, but can’t afford the payments so Balki (Bronson Pinchot) and Mary Anne (Rebecca Arthur) will move in. Sept. 20.

“Baby Talk”--The series has an entire new look and new cast. Mary Page Keller (“Duet”) takes over as single mother Maggie Campbell. Scott Baio (“Charles in Charge”) is the building superintendent/aspiring songwriter who has eyes for Maggie. Polly Bergen (“Winds of War”) co-stars as Maggie’s opinionated mother. Sept. 20.

“Who’s the Boss?”--Tony (Tony Danza) and Angela (Judith Light) finally admit their feelings for each other. The series moves from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. Sept. 28.

“Growing Pains”--Leonardo DiCaprio will join the cast as Luke Brower, a homeless teen-ager whom Mike Seaver (Kirk Cameron) befriends. The series moves to Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 28.

“The Young Riders”--The Pony Express relocates to the Nebraska-Kansas-Missouri area. The series moves from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays. Oct. 5.

CBS

“Murder, She Wrote”--Besides solving cases in Cabot Cove, Jessica (Angela Lansbury) will teach a class in criminology at a Manhattan university, where corpses are sure to turn up. Sept. 15.

“Murphy Brown”--All questions about Murphy’s (Candice Bergen) pregnancy will be answered in the first episode. Sept. 16.

“Designing Women”--Suzanne Sugarbaker (Delta Burke, who received her walking papers) has moved to Japan to live with her mother. Julia Duffy (“Newhart” and “Baby Talk”) joins the cast as the obnoxious Allison Sugarbaker, cousin of Julia (Dixie Carter) and Suzanne. Jan Hooks of “Saturday Night Live” also comes on board as Charlene’s (Jean Smart) younger sister Carlene. Smart has left the series to be a full-time mom, but will make appearances during the season. Sept. 23.

“The Trials of Rosie O’Neill”--Ed Asner joins the series this week as a conservative, opinionated ex-cop. Now in its new 9 p.m. Thursday time slot. Ed Asner talks about his new role, Page 7.

“Knots Landing”--Bruce Greenwood of “St. Elsewhere” joins the cast as Paige’s (Nicolette Sheridan) new boyfriend. Thursday.

FOX

“In Living Color”--Shawn Wayans (a.k.a. DJ SW1), Steve Park and Jamie Foxx are the Emmy-winning series new regulars. Sept. 22.

“Married ... With Children”--The stork will be doing double duty when Peg Bundy (Katey Sagal, who also is pregnant) discovers she is expecting, as is next-door-neighbor Marcy (Amanda Bearse). Tonight.

“Get a Life!”--Chris (Chris Elliott) will move out of the house and move into a friend’s (new cast member Brian Doyle-Murray) garage. Return date to be announced.

NBC

“Blossom”--Barnard Hughes joins the cast as Buzz Richman, Blossom’s grandfather who is undergoing a delayed midlife crisis. Sept. 16.

“Law & Order”--Award-winning actor Paul Sorvino joins the cast. Sept. 17.

“A Different World”--Kim Reese (Charnele Brown) and her roommate Winnifred Brooks (Cree Summer) have a new roommate, Lena (Jada Pinkett), who hails from the Baltimore projects. Premieres Sept. 19.

“Cheers”--Sam (Ted Danson) and Rebecca (Kirstie Alley) try to have a baby. Woody (Woody Harrelson) will get married. Woody Harrelson’s good friend, Glenn Close, will guest as Frasier’s (Kelsey Grammar) secret ex-wife. Sept. 19.

“L.A. Law”-- The Emmy-winning series enters its sixth season with one new cast regular and three new recurring regulars. Recurring regular Sheila Kelly (secretary Gwen Taylor) becomes the 13th cast regular. Joining as recurring regulars are: Conchata Ferrell as a headstrong entertainment lawyer, Michael Cumpsty as a killer litigator and Tom Verica as an attorney. Oct. 10.

“Dear John”--Ralph (Harry Groener) has left town and the One-Two-One club for a job as a toll collector at a Midwestern tunnel. The series moves to Fridays at 9 p.m. Sept. 20.
