SAN CLEMENTE : Bird Sanctuary Signs Approved by City

In a move that is largely symbolic, the City Council has agreed to allow the construction of signs announcing that the city is a bird sanctuary.

Three wood sandblasted signs, measuring up to 24 square feet, will be erected at the pier, Ole Hanson Beach Club and along the T Street area.

They will read “San Clemente is a Bird Sanctuary,” said Ken Fortune, president of the South Coast Audubon Society, the 500-member group that is footing the bill for the project.

Fortune had no estimate of the cost of the signs, but said the group is accepting community donations.

Although the city declared itself a bird sanctuary in 1965, the group began pushing for a more visible commitment last year. The Planning Commission approved the project in August.

On Wednesday, Councilman Joseph Anderson questioned the significance of the project, asking if the signs would restrain the city in any way. “Does this mean anything other than we appreciate birds?”

Fortune said that simply letting people know the city appreciates birds is enough. “We appreciate the heritage that we’ve had and the relationship with the nature community.”
