Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Staten Island Ferry Back in Operation

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Staten Island ferry landed thousands of New York commuters at a Coast Guard terminal on the day after its own terminal was badly damaged by fire. Many passengers were upset, even though they rode free on Monday, because the trip to Manhattan took up to an hour instead of the usual 20 minutes. Morning rush-hour ridership was down, to 18,000 from 23,600. Firefighters were still hosing down the roof of the ferry terminal 24 hours after the fire. The fire was declared suspicious, but pockets of flames have prevented fire marshals from mounting a full investigation.
