World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Beijing Releases Hong Kong Man

China freed Hong Kong businessman Lo Haixing, 42, convicted of trying to help two pro-democracy activists escape in 1989. It is believed that Beijing agreed to release Lo, who served 23 months of a five-year sentence, as a kind of repayment to British Prime Minister John Major. Last week, Major became the first Western leader to visit China since its crackdown in June, 1989, and he requested Lo’s release. “I am very happy. I look forward to seeing my two children,” Lo said in a telephone interview from Canton.
