COUNTYWIDE : Enrollment Up at 3 Community Colleges
Although the three community colleges in Ventura County have been forced to turn away students because of closed classes, enrollment has increased slightly over last year, officials said.
John Tallman, vice chancellor of instruction and student services, said enrollment at Oxnard, Ventura and Moorpark colleges has reached 33,086, about 2,000 above last year’s figures.
“The figures suggest that we’ll be at an all-time high,” Tallman said, “but it spreads us really thin.”
Tallman estimates that officials at the colleges have been forced to turn away from 200 to 500 students because of closed classes. Classes started on Aug. 26.
“We just did not have enough math and English classes,” Tallman said. “Unfortunately, the students who needed them the most didn’t get them. And we’re not pleased about that.”
Tallman said administrators hope to add more basic classes to the spring schedule.
