World IN BRIEF : MONGOLIA : President Quits Communist Party

Mongolia’s President Punsalmaagiyn Ochirbat and several other senior officials resigned from the Communist Party under a new law requiring officials to either quit party affiliations or give up their posts. Renunciation of party ties--including memberships in democratic opposition parties--is aimed at ensuring that officials act impartially and not under party direction.
