Six people were shot and stabbed to death Tuesday in attacks on commuter trains, bringing the death toll to 92 in the latest wave of black factional fighting.

Black leaders still plan to sign a peace accord on Saturday that was worked out before the clashes erupted last weekend between rival factions in black townships.

The peace pact involving the white-led government, the African National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party has been billed as an important attempt to end the fighting. But previous peace accords have collapsed, delaying President Frederik W. de Klerk’s efforts for additional political reform.

Police and army reinforcements patrolled the strife-torn black townships Tuesday after imposing an overnight curfew in the hardest-hit areas.

But new fighting erupted in Soweto township, southwest of Johannesburg, when gunmen opened fire early Tuesday on people waiting for trains at the Dube station, killing three women.

At least three more people were stabbed to death during the night on commuter trains, police said. Six were stabbed and wounded when they tried to get off a train at a station in Soweto.
