SOVIET YES: When news of the coup broke, UC Irvine professor John Whiteley was set to scuttle an 11-day Moscow trip, figuring it was the wrong time to help Soviets fight for cleanup of, among others, the Chelyabinsk region, a 1957 nuclear blast site more contaminated than Chernobyl. . . . “I changed my mind when I saw (Soviet President Mikhail S.) Gorbachev get off the plane from the Crimea,” said the professor in the Global Peace and Conflict Studies program. He leaves this week with two other UCI professors.
