Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Drinking Laws Hit by Surgeon General

Laws intended to keep minors from drinking are “riddled with loopholes” that make it easy for teen-agers to buy and drink alcoholic beverages, Surgeon General Antonia Coello Novello said in releasing a report describing the weaknesses of such laws. All states, under federal pressure, have adopted 21 as the minimum age for drinking, but loopholes leave opportunities for youths to buy and consume alcohol, Novello said.
