TENNIS ROUNDUP : Agassi Defeats McEnroe in Straight Sets

Andre Agassi scored a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over John McEnroe Thursday night in their tennis exhibition match at the Forum.

The No. 8-ranked Agassi evened his record at 2-2 against McEnroe, who is ranked 26th, before a crowd of 14,079.

Agassi lost only five points on his serve in the first set and took advantage of two double faults to break McEnroe in the fourth game. In the tiebreaker, Agassi trailed, 2-0, before winning the next five points.

The Forum Tennis Challenge will resume Nov. 20, when Agassi meets 12th-ranked David Wheaton.

Olivier Delaitre and Fabrice Santoro continued the French domination of the Bordeaux Open at Bordeaux, France.

Delaitre upset second-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals, and Santoro, seeded third, beat Carlos Costa of Spain, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Unseeded Todd Martin ousted third-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), to advance to the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Philips Open at Brasilia, Brazil.

King Lambert of Santa Ana defeated Bill Ball of Aspen, Colo., 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s 60-and-over Grasscourt Championship at Cedarhurst, N.Y.

In the quarterfinals of the 65-and-over division, top-seeded Fred Kovaleski of New York beat Robert Perez of Irvine, 6-4, 6-0.

In the semifinals of the women’s 70-and-over class, Dodo Cheney of Santa Monica beat Louise Segar of Rockport, Mass., 6-0, 6-0.
