LISZT: Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos. 1-6. ENESCO: Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1. London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Antal Dorati. Mercury Living Presence 432 015-2. Philips’ Living Presence treasure hunt rolls on with these famous recordings, which date to 1960 and 1963. Dorati unleashes all of the rip-roaring ferocity, dashing spirit and authentic lilt that one could want in the Liszt rhapsodies, qualities also right at home in Enesco. The sound is miraculous for its time--airy, detailed, transparent, with a close-up cimbalom clattering away--and only the underlying tape hiss betrays its age.
