When fall clothing explodes with bold pattern and rich color, summer’s pale lips and nails get lost in the seasonal shuffle. So makeup companies are adding darker, more luxurious-looking shades to their collections to help lips and nails hold their own against this year’s plaids and paisleys in warm earth and jewel tones. The new lipsticks are matte and muted, like Lancome’s Hydra-Riche Rose Brio and Sherry Velours, which call to mind a Mexican fiesta, and Shiseido’s Orangette or Christian Dior’s Siena, more reminiscent of autumn in the Pacific Northwest. Good choices for hands, from the bright to the smoldering, are Princess Marcella Borghese’s Pink Puccini Lumina Nail Lacquer and Stendhal’s Prune Nail Polish.
