A Guide to the Best of Southern California : Hot Wingdings!

Roxbury and Arena may be losing their glitter as celebrity party palaces. Flying high as the newest, brightest hot spot is . . . the Museum of Flying at Santa Monica Airport.

The “L.A. Law” crew held a party among the biplanes, troop planes and war birds permanently parked at the three-story museum. So did the producers and cast of “Roseanne.” Friends threw a belated wedding party alongside the Top Gun fighters of earlier years for actor Tom (Maverick) Cruise.

“We’ve had birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and a Jewish wedding with a parachute dangling from a balcony as a chuppa,” says Bob Convey, museum manager.

“Hotels and bars and clubs are fine for parties,” he adds. “But if you’ve been to two, you’ve seen them all. Here, at least, the surroundings are real and the atmosphere authentic.”

Sometimes, Convey notes, the romance of flight, love taking wing, the wild blue yonder and the Mile High Club become overpowering emotions.

“We once found a couple in the DC-3 having a lot of fun,” he said.
