A former sheriff’s deputy was acquitted Monday of two charges of attempted rape.
Ray Johnson, 37, a five-year veteran who worked at the Encinitas sheriff’s substation, was found not guilty of attempting to rape a 16-year-old girl while asleep in an Encinitas apartment on Aug. 2, 1990.
The Superior Court jury deliberated 1 1/2 days.
Moments after the verdict was announced, Johnson said he believed he never would have been tried had he not been a law enforcement officer. Johnson, who said he was quietly fired after charges were filed against him in April, said he is appealing his termination.
