Scott Lewis fared a lot better the second time he saw the Texas Rangers. But Brian Bohanon looked just the same to the Angels.

Lewis shut out Texas before tiring in the eighth inning Tuesday night and the Angels beat the Rangers, 7-2.

Lewis (2-5) stopped the Rangers until the eighth, when Rob Maurer lined a two-run double for his first major league hit. Lewis gave up eight hits, struck out five and walked one in seven-plus innings.

Six days ago, Lewis lasted only three innings against Texas and gave up five runs and seven hits.

“I just made better pitches to them tonight,” Lewis said. “I tried to throw my fastball until I got ahead in the count and then go with my off-speed stuff.

“It was just one of those timing things. When I threw the breaking ball ahead in the count they couldn’t afford not to swing,” he said.

Wally Joyner was the hitting star for the Angels as he doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs.

California rapped Bohanon (3-3) the same way it did when he started against Lewis last week. The Angels chased him with five runs in 2 2/3 innings that day, and this time tagged him for seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Angels scored twice in the second on an RBI single by John Orton and an RBI grounder by Shawn Abner.

An error by shortstop Jeff Huson and Dave Winfield’s single made it 4-0 in the third. Joyner hit a two-run double during a three-run fourth.

Ranger second baseman Julio Franco, the American League batting leader, returned to the Texas lineup after missing two games because of tightness in both hamstrings.
