La Mesa police Tuesday arrested a suspect in an attempted rape that had just occurred in San Diego.

La Mesa Police Officer Ed O’Neill stopped Anthony Michael Crane, 29, for speeding at 4:48 p.m. in the 7900 block of El Capitan Drive, said a police spokeswoman. During the stop, O’Neill heard over his radio that Crane was wanted for questioning in an attempted rape that had just occurred on El Cajon Boulevard.

Crane allegedly picked up a prostitute on the 6400 block of El Cajon Boulevard and pulled a gun on her, said Sgt. Alicia Lampert of the San Diego police sex crimes division.

The woman escaped from Crane’s car and called police, Lampert said.

Crane, of the 5500 block of Balboa Arms Drive in San Diego, was booked into County Jail on suspicion of attempted rape, false imprisonment and possession of a gun.

Crane is being held on $40,000 bail and will be arraigned Sept. 20. Ventura County has a $20,000 warrant for his arrest on suspicion of robbery, said a spokeswoman from the Ventura County Courthouse.
