Readers See No Need for KCET Apology

Share

I applaud KCET’s airing and especially its efforts to provide a forum for both proponents and opponents of the film.

It’s interesting that on one hand Cardinal Mahony urges his followers to view the film, then damns the station for airing it. And in fact, after viewing the film I find that the group that deserves the most criticism is ACT UP. While I am sympathetic to their cause, I cannot condone their tactics. I would have never been aware of the militancy and outright hostility promoted by them had I not been given the opportunity to watch the film.

Certain religious and political leaders in this country might have us believe that by silencing opposition, shutting down channels of communication and inhibiting open, frank discussion of controversial issues that the moral problems facing us will go away.

I thank KCET for allowing me the opportunity to view the opinions of those different than mine and for giving us an arena for discussing our differences and I continue to be amazed by religious leaders who assert that ignorance and isolation are the way to deliverance and salvation.
