An off-duty San Diego police officer was assaulted by three men Sunday when he went to investigate sounds coming from the canyon behind his house.

Officer Jack Sergojan heard pounding at 5:30 a.m. in the canyon behind his house near the 153000 block of California 67 in Poway, a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said.

Sergojan and a neighbor who also went to investigate the noise saw three men trying to open a large safe with a sledgehammer. When Sergojan confronted them, one of the men tried to hit Sergojan with the sledgehammer, the spokeswoman said.

The men then got into a car and tried to run down Sergojan and retrieve the safe, but failed. They drove toward California 67, leaving Sergojan and his neighbor uninjured.

Sergojan fired several shots from his handgun at the fleeing car, but apparently did not hit it.
