A young gunman wearing a black baseball cap and a black T-shirt attempted back-to-back robberies of a supermarket and a motel in Port Hueneme early Tuesday morning, police said.

The man escaped with an undetermined amount of cash from the motel, authorities said.

At 12:01 a.m., the man--described as white, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds--entered the Alpha Beta market on North Ventura Road and demanded cash from a grocery checker, Port Hueneme police said. The checker, John Duran, tried to grab the suspect’s handgun, resulting in a brief struggle, police said.

The suspect fled after hitting Duran on the neck with the weapon, police said. The checker was not seriously injured, they said.

About 15 minutes later, a man of the same description succeeded in robbing a night manager at the Casa Via Mar Inn on West Channel Islands Boulevard, police said. The suspect inquired about a room and then demanded money from Renee Force, police said. He then fled. No one was injured.

Police did not immediately know how much cash was taken. The day manager of the 74-unit motel declined to comment on the robbery.
