John Howlett; PR Director for Opera

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated Saturday for John Howlett, director of marketing and public relations for the Los Angeles Music Center Opera since its inception in 1985. Howlett was 41 when he died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday of the complications of AIDS.

A former dance student and dance critic in his native New York, he became press representative for such artists as Paul Taylor, Marcel Marceau and Twyla Tharp and then public relations director for the New York Shakespeare Festival before coming to California.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Richard Atkins, his parents, Frank and Cathleen Howlett, and two brothers.

Donations in his name are asked to the AIDS Support Group at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Hollywood, where the Mass will be said Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
