COUNTYWIDE : Center Offers Tips on Transportation

Transportation officials on Wednesday formally dedicated Ventura County’s new transportation information center, which residents can call for information about public and private transportation.

By dialing a toll-free number--1-800-438-1112--residents can get information about bus routes, fares and schedules throughout the county, said Mary Travis, a county transportation official. Callers will also be able to request brochures and maps of bus routes and bike paths.

“It’s really exciting,” Travis said. “It will be a benefit to all county residents.”

The information center was established in response to complaints that information on transit services is difficult to obtain, officials said.

The center is in the offices of the county Transportation Commission in the Government Center in Ventura. The office will be staffed with English- and Spanish-speaking operators from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and an answering machine will be used to take calls after hours, Travis said.

The center has been operating for the past two weeks and has averaged about 20 calls a day, Travis said. However, she said transportation officials expect that number to eventually reach about 300 calls a day.
