U.S., EC to Tackle Airbus Issue Again: The two sides averted a showdown over U.S. charges of unfair European government assistance in the building of Airbus jetliners by agreeing to fresh discussions of the 4-year-old dispute. The United States says state aid to the Airbus consortium--made up of aircraft companies in France, Germany, Spain and Britain--is illegal under the subsidy rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The EC counters that U.S. military contracts have provided billions of dollars of indirect aid for civilian aircraft production.
