‘92 Democratic Candidates
In your Sept. 18 evaluation of “free-thinking” Democratic presidential hopefuls (front page, Sept. 18) you touch on Jerry Brown’s travels during his six-year sabbatical from politics. There is mention of his three weeks as a volunteer to Mother Teresa--at “Nirmal Hriday” (House of the Pure Heart)--caring for Calcutta’s sick and dying. The commentary was that actions like this “could refuel his old reputation as an oddball . . . and opportunist.”
The guy was feeding the sick, washing soiled clothes, cleaning open wounds and emptying bedpans. Unbelievable! Here is someone willing to get off his ass and give a damn and you are questioning his political motives?
If compassion seems “odd,” the commitment Jerry Brown demonstrated is downright bizarre.
