The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Trustees awarded a $3.25-million contract to the San Jacinto-based M.L. Hansen Co. to renovate Lincoln Elementary School in Corona del Mar.

Board members, who unanimously approved the contract, said the company is expected to begin construction next month.

The project is expected to be completed in time for school to reopen next fall, board President Sherry Loofbourrow said.

Lincoln Elementary, on Pacific View Drive, was closed nearly a decade ago because of declining enrollment. It has been leased for other uses since then.

District officials began considering reopening the former middle school in recent years as elementary school enrollment increased districtwide.

The renovation plans are considered innovative by district officials. To better tailor instruction, the school will be built into two separate parts, one for kindergarten through third grade, and the other for the upper elementary grades.
