Unisys Corp., the financially troubled computer maker, said it has completed the sale of its Timeplex Inc. division to a joint venture led by Ascom Holding AG of Switzerland for $207 million . . . Baker Hughes Inc. reports that the number of working oil and gas rigs in the United States increased by five this week to 775 but still trailed the 1,055 rigs working at this time last year . . . Houston-based Continental Airlines has received tentative approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin nonstop service between its Newark, N.J., hub and Madrid, Spain. Final DOT approval is expected next month . . . Orders for U.S.-made machine tools climbed 22% in August for their third consecutive monthly gain, but were still well below year-ago levels, the Assn. for Manufacturing Technology said. Orders rose to $235.70 million from July’s $193.25 million, but were off 14.8% from $276.80 million a year ago.
