HUNTINGTON BEACH : Bolsa Chica Groups Seek Young Helpers

Share

Two Bolsa Chica advocacy groups are seeking high school students to serve as Boy Scout Explorers in a newly created volunteer post at the wetlands.

Representatives from Amigos de Bolsa Chica and the Bolsa Chica Conservancy recently established Explorers posts at the wildlife preserve after meeting with Randy Wentz, local director of the Boy Scouts of America Explorers program.

The Explorers will focus on ecology at the wetlands and other wildlife habitats, officials said. In doing so, participants will serve a direct role in the restoration of the Bolsa Chica preserve, due to get under way during the next several years, they said.

The program aims to provide high school students with information about potential careers and volunteer opportunities in biological and environmental sciences.

Explorers will meet three times a month with professionals from a variety of science fields, who will teach lessons in their specialized areas and discuss career opportunities.

One organizational meeting has been held for the Bolsa Chica Explorers, but officials are seeking more volunteers.
