Lakers, With Same Cast, to Begin Training Camp at Palm Desert Today

Share

With the very same team that closed last season, the Lakers will open training camp today.

Despite a flurry of last-minute phone calls Monday, General Manager Jerry West was unable to complete a deal for Seattle guard Sedale Threatt. Thus the Lakers will open with second-year pro Tony Smith again the front-runner for the backup point guard spot behind Magic Johnson.

West is still trying to drum up a deal, though, so this season’s roster isn’t set yet. For the moment, all the other stalwarts from last season will be back, among them veterans Mychal Thompson and Larry Drew, who had expected to be elsewhere.

The Lakers are breaking with recent history and forsaking Hawaii to train once more in the desert. They will be here for eight days, will play the Boston Celtics twice in New England, then will leave for Paris and the McDonald’s Classic.
